H.Y.P.E. Program

Hattiloo Young Professional Experience (H.Y.P.E.) is a group of young professionals, 23 - 40 years old, who volunteer their time to introduce other young professionals to Hattiloo through a series of experiential events and special performances.



Starting in Season 11 with The Devil's Music: The Life and Blues of Bessie Smith, H.Y.P.E. performances are the second Friday of each play. Discounted tickets are available to young professionals, 23 - 40 years old. And they can mingle with one, enjoying specialty cocktails and the latest in urban music, an hour and 1/2 before curtain.

To increase young professionals' cultural enrichment and enjoyment of each play, H.Y.P.E. invites you to join them on the following experiential events, dates TBD.

  • The Devil's Music: the Life and Blues of Bessie Smith.Young professionals will gather and tour the Blues Museum
  • Mr. Rickey Calls a Meeting. Young professionals will view a movie about the Negro Leagues
  • The House That Will Not Stand.Young professionals will explore Memphis' neighborhood known as Voodoo Village
  • Take the Soul Train to Christmas.Young professionals will engage in a talkback with the playwright, Ekundayo Bandele
  • Blueprints to Freedom: an Ode to Bayard Rustin.Young professionals will have a special tour of the National Civil Rights Museum
  • Crowns.Young professionals will worship together at Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church
  • Gem of the Ocean.Young professionals will ride along with Heritage Tours
  • Aida.Young professionals will tour Bass Pro that's housed in the Pyramid

The 2016 H.Y.P.E. Committee members are Roland ColeTarrin McGhee, Joya Smith, Lesley Brown, Tami Sawyer, Jamond Bullock, Jamal Whitlow, Anjelica Hardin, Renee White, Ernest Gibson, Tim Pruitt, and Athena Turner.
