ABOUT THE PRODUCTION:

Five Guys Named Moe is about Nomax – he’s broke, his lovely Lorraine left him and he’s listening to the radio at 5:00 in the morning. Out of the radio, five guys named Moe appear. Set to Louis Jordan’s iconic rhythm and blues/jazz score, the Moes encourage Nomax to turn his life around and tell Lorraine that he loves her. This show enjoyed a Broadway run and was nominated for two Tony Awards.

A white teen who has grown up in the affectionate company of the two Black waiters who work in his mother’s tearoom in Port Elizabeth learns that his viciously racist, alcoholic father is on his way home from the hospital. An ensuing rage unwittingly triggers his inevitable passage into the culture of hatred fostered by apartheid.

  • Willie: Male, 30-49; black South African; 30s-40s; a waiter in a tea shop; friendly and sweet, but short-tempered; he is hardworking and dedicated to the task at hand; has a tumultuous relationship with women.
  • Hally (Cast): Male, 15-18; white South African; mid-teens; son of the tea shop owners; clever, pretentious, and still has much to learn; he is most joyful when matching wits and showing off his intellect; struggles deeply with his alcoholic father’s influence on his life. Role has been cast. Seeking possible or future replacements, if needed.

The Velveteen Rabbit was the boy’s favorite birthday present. But when the party started the Velveteen Rabbit was forgotten. He lived for a long time in the toy cupboard, dreaming of becoming real. When the boy rediscovers his favorite toy, the Velveteen Rabbit embarks upon the best summer ever. But when the boy gets very sick, the Velveteen Rabbit learns what it means to be a loyal friend and what it really takes to become real.

  • Nursery Magic Fairy: Must be a triple threat (sings, dances, acts); a mystical character; helpful, joyful and sweet; she appears in dreams.
  • Passage of Time: Must also be a triple threat; Nursery Magic Fairy’s sidekick. They always appear onstage together. Equally magical and joyful, she shows the passage of time through dance and by making seasons and time change.
  • Son/Boy: Male; Very sweet, very active, somewhat mischievous. He loves his toys and playing outside.
  • The Velveteen Rabbit: Male or female. The “youngest” of the toys, emotionally; everything is new to the Rabbit. Runs the gamut of emotions: shy and uncertain, scared and sad, jubilantly happy; loves Skin Horse and Boy, and wants very much to be loved in return; the only “soft” toy other than the Skin Horse; lots of physical comedy.
  • Aunt: Female. A special Christmas guest who is enamored of her nephew, Boy.
  • Uncle: Male. Another special Christmas guest.
  • Mother: Female. Very nurturing, loving woman who wants only the best for her son.
  • Father/Pops: Male. Wise man, great sense of humor, head of household.
  • Toy Engine: Male or female. Acts super cool; like the “popular” kid.
  • Clockwork Mouse: Male or female. Very official, the “smart” kid, the leader, biting tone.
  • Model Boat: Male or female. One of the gang, but tries hard to be cool by sounding official and being funny.
  • Timothy, the Jointed Wooden Lion: Male or female. One of the gang wants to be cooler, so pretends to be from the government and has top secret information.
  • Skin Horse: Male or Female. Kind and wise and gentle; often plays mediator or parent to the other toys.
  • Nana: Female. Mary Poppins type character. Kind yet strict, one of the family. Very tidy and generally proper, has a very tender heart.
  • “Real” Rabbits: The rabbits the Velveteen Rabbit encounters while out to play with the boy. They don’t take kindly to the odd-looking rabbit at first. They love to dance and play!

  • Ama: Black Female, 18 (pronounced Ahh-Mah); the sensible, smart one of Paulina’s pack; is not afraid to say it like she means it.
  • Nana: Black Female, 16 (pronounced Nah-Nah); the simple pseudo dumb one of Paulina’s pack; she struggles with her love of food and snacks; very sensitive.
  • Mercy: Black Female, 16;  the witty sidekick to Gifty and will do and say anything to stay a member of Paulina’s pack.
  • Gifty: Female, 16; the ‘Frick’ to Mercy’s ‘Frack’; loves being part of Paulina’s pack and will do anything to be considered cool.
  • Headmistress Francis: Black Female, 40-49; the Headmistress of Aburi Girls Boarding School; loves the girls but is also constantly exhausted by them.
  • Eloise Amponsah : Black Female, 40-49 (pronounced Amm-Pone-Saah); extremely poised and well-mannered former Miss Ghana 1976; she now is a recruiter for the Miss Ghana Pageant; she speaks with a slightly affected British accent and prides herself in always being a lady.

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION:

After a matriarch’s death, the women in the family clean Grandma’s attic and find love and old memories packed away, and in the process, hit tunes that trace the history of Black women, from the trials of the 1930s through the Girl Groups of the 60s to the empowerment of the 90s. Songs include “Oh, Happy Day,” “Mama Said,” “I Will Survive,” “Tyrone,” “I am Not My Hair” and “A Woman’s Worth.”

  • Gloria: Black Female; mezzo soprano. She is a devoutly religious woman who is just coming out of the grief of losing her loving husband, and now her beloved grandmother. She is in her 30s or early 40s.
  • Simone: Black Female; Mezzo soprano. Late 30s-40s; the divorced mother of 17-year-old Tamika. Simone got her doctorate from Harvard in African-American Music, and is a professor. She has the demeanor of an educated person, and sometimes gets a little know-it-all.
  • Tamika: Black Female, Soprano with belt. 18+; a woman about to graduate from high school. She looks 18 and has the feel of “the street.” Daughter of Simone.
  • Roberta: Black Female, late 30s-40s; Alto. Strong and full of anger, some of it later revealed to be a result of a childhood trauma.
  • Heather: White Female, 30s-40s, Belter. Simone’s sister-in-law and therefore one of the Sistas. She’s worked very hard to be accepted into the family. She is spunky and full of life. She is a social worker.
