Young Voices of COVID-19

What has it been like to be a teenager during the first year of a historic pandemic?

Hattiloo’s “Young Voices of COVID-19,” sponsored by the City of Memphis, provided teenagers facing adversity during the coronavirus pandemic an opportunity to share their own experiences.

Being trapped inside — and missing the milestones that ordinarily mark coming-of-age moments — was lonely, disorienting, and depressing. While some teens bonded with siblings, found small comforts in Zoom-school, wrote, sang, danced, and painted, there’s no denying this generation will be forever changed.

In “Young Voices of COVID-19,” teens across Memphis tell us how they have met life’s challenges in the midst of a pandemic. They express themselves authentically and creatively, using their stories to connect with, uplift, and inspire their peers.
