Hattiloo Theatre’s mission is to develop a Black theatre that is accessible to, relevant to, and reflective of a multicultural community.
Our History
Founded in 2006 by Ekundayo Bandele with support from a board led by Michael de Caetani, Hattiloo Theatre was established as a nonprofit to fulfill the need for a professional Black theatre in Memphis. Named after Bandele’s daughters, the theatre began in a small storefront in the Edge District and quickly earned recognition for its ambitious productions and commitment to community storytelling. Through strategic growth, including a debt-free move to a state-of-the-art Overton Square facility in 2014, the development of a Technical Theatre Center, and the addition of artist housing through HattiHouse, Hattiloo expanded its impact across the region. Today, it stands as the only freestanding Black repertory theatre in the region, serving audiences across five states while providing accessible programming, nurturing artists, and championing Black stories through innovative leadership and community engagement.
Our Role in Memphis
Hattiloo Theatre plays a vital role in Memphis’s arts and culture scene as the city’s only Black repertory theatre, creating a space where Black stories are centered and shared with diverse audiences. We help strengthen Memphis’s reputation as a cultural destination, support local artists and creative professionals, provide educational opportunities for youth and emerging performers, and spark meaningful conversations about history, identity, and social issues.
Artistic and Community Work
Hattiloo Theatre produces a full season of live performances in Memphis, showcasing classic works, contemporary plays, and emerging voices in Black theatre through high-quality, meaningful storytelling. In addition to its mainstage productions featuring professional actors and directors, Hattiloo engages the community through educational and outreach programs such as student matinees, school partnerships, in-school residencies, acting and technical theatre training, youth workshops, camps, workforce development opportunities, and post-show discussions. By offering free and low-cost performances and expanding access to the arts, Hattiloo fosters creativity, learning, and cultural connection throughout Memphis and beyond.
