We Choose Tomorrow brings together Rwandan and Black American artists in three original works exploring resilience, courage, identity, and legacy.

Umuganda: The Choice to Live follows Rwandans whose sense of community, joy, and belonging is fractured by division, and their powerful choice to come together again, rebuild, reconnect, and reclaim a life filled with strength, color, unity, and joy. Ndabaga brings to life the story of a young woman who challenges gender expectations and proves that courage can make the impossible possible. The evening closes with What We Carry, a devised choreopoem exploring what we inherit, what we release, and what we choose to pass forward.

Together, the works ask one powerful question: What do we choose to make of tomorrow?

This production is presented as part of the Bridging Worlds: An International Black Theatre Initiative, which launches Hattiloo’s Pan-African collaborations, marking the start of its next twenty years of leadership in uniting Black theatre across the globe. This groundbreaking festival brings three acclaimed Black theatre companies to Memphis for exclusive two-week residencies: Norway’s Nordic Black Theatre, Nigeria’s Jos Theatre (Death Road), and South Africa’s Market Theatre.

Alongside powerful performances, artists will lead immersive workshops, masterclasses, and public discussions to foster cultural exchange and dialogue. Bridging Worlds celebrates the shared Black experience across the diaspora, uniting Memphis with the global stage.
